Sunshine & Safety: Pediatrician-Approved Summer Tips for Families
From Pool Time to Playtime:
West Orlando Pediatrics’ Summer Safety Tips
At West Orlando Pediatrics in Ocoee, we know that summer is a time for sunshine, water play, and family fun. But it’s also when children are most at risk for preventable injuries and sunburn. As your local pediatrician, I want to share a few quick tips to keep your family safe—so you can focus on making happy memories all summer long.
Let’s start with water safety. Drowning remains one of the leading causes of accidental death in children, and it can happen in seconds. Florida leads the nation in this unfortunate statistic. Whether you’re at the beach, a public pool, or your backyard, always designate an adult to be the "water watcher." Consider enrolling your kids in swim lessons before the season heats up—Southwest Aquatics in Ocoee offers excellent, age-appropriate instruction to help kids stay safe and confident in the water.
Don’t overlook sun protection and bike safety. Apply SPF 30+ sunscreen every 2 hours, especially after swimming or sweating. Lightweight clothing, wide-brimmed hats, and shade breaks are great ways to avoid sunburn. And anytime your child is riding a bike, scooter, or rollerblades, a properly fitted helmet is a must. From all of us at West Orlando Pediatrics, we wish you a summer full of laughter, growth, and safe adventures!
