Cyclospora and the Current Outbreak: What Parents Need to Know

Kevin O'Brien • August 7, 2026

You may have heard about the recent increase in cases of Cyclospora, a microscopic parasite that can cause an intestinal infection called cyclosporiasis.

As of late July 2026, the CDC has reported more than 4,100 laboratory-confirmed domestically acquired cases of cyclosporiasis since May 1, with more than 7,400 additional cases still requiring investigation and analysis. These numbers are likely an underestimate of the true number of infections because many people with diarrhea do not seek medical care, and Cyclospora testing is not always included in routine stool testing. A current multistate outbreak has been linked to iceberg lettuce, and recalled lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico should not be eaten.

The symptoms of Cyclospora can include frequent, watery diarrhea, abdominal cramping, bloating, increased gas, nausea, loss of appetite, weight loss, and fatigue. Unlike many short-lived stomach viruses, cyclosporiasis can last for weeks or may seem to improve and then return. If your child develops persistent or significant diarrhea, particularly if it is accompanied by other symptoms such as abdominal cramping, poor appetite, or unusual fatigue, we are happy to evaluate them in our office. Testing for Cyclospora as well as other infectious and non-infectious causes of diarrhea is available.

The current outbreak should not discourage families from providing children with the fruits and vegetables they need as part of a healthy diet. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children eat a variety of fruits and vegetables every day, and these foods provide important vitamins, minerals, fiber, and other nutrients that support healthy growth and development. Parents can reduce the risk of foodborne illness by washing produce thoroughly under running water before eating or preparing it and by following current food recalls and public health advisories. While no food safety measure eliminates risk completely, the risk of Cyclospora infection remains low when families follow good food-handling practices and avoid specifically recalled products.

At West Orlando Pediatrics, we are always available to help when your child is sick or you have concerns about their health. If your child develops persistent diarrhea or other symptoms that concern you, please give us a call. We can evaluate your child, determine whether stool testing is appropriate, and help identify the cause so that your child can receive the right care.
