Back-to-School Anxiety: Helping Your Child Start the Year with Confidence

Kevin O'Brien • August 7, 2026

The start of a new school year can be an exciting time, but it can also bring anxiety for many children.

New teachers, new classrooms, changes in routines, academic expectations, and social pressures can all contribute to feelings of worry or nervousness. Some children may have trouble sleeping, complain of stomach aches or headaches, become more irritable, or suddenly not want to go to school. Anxiety is common in children—in fact, recent CDC data indicate that about 11% of children ages 3-17 have a current, diagnosed anxiety disorder. The good news is that recognizing anxiety early gives families and pediatricians an opportunity to address concerns before they become more disruptive.

At West Orlando Pediatrics, we believe in looking for signs of emotional and behavioral health concerns as part of caring for the whole child. Current American Academy of Pediatrics guidance recommends anxiety screening beginning at age 8, along with ongoing screening for behavioral and emotional concerns at younger ages. In our practice, we routinely ask about these issues even earlier when appropriate, sometimes beginning as young as age 3. For younger children who may not have the words to explain how they are feeling, play therapy can be an especially effective way to help them express emotions, develop coping skills, and work through worries.

There are many tools available to help children manage anxiety, and the right approach depends on the child's age, personality, and individual needs. This may include helping families identify sources of stress, teaching children practical coping and relaxation techniques, working with schools when appropriate, and connecting families with licensed mental health counselors. Addressing anxiety early can help prevent it from interfering with school, friendships, family life, and a child's overall confidence.

If your child is struggling with anxiety, having difficulty adjusting to the new school year, or showing other changes in mood or behavior, please reach out to us. Anxiety and other mental health concerns are important parts of your child's health, and we are here to help identify concerns early and connect your family with the support and resources your child needs.
