Halloween is one of the most exciting times of the year for children, filled with costumes, candy, and plenty of fun.

While the holiday is meant to be festive, it’s also important for parents to keep safety in mind to ensure the night is memorable for all the right reasons. A few simple precautions can help prevent accidents and keep your family safe while trick-or-treating.

Costume safety is a great place to start. Make sure costumes fit properly to avoid trips or falls, and avoid masks or accessories that block vision. Adding reflective tape, glow sticks, or flashlights is a smart way to make children more visible to drivers once the sun goes down. Comfortable shoes are also a must—Halloween often involves a lot of walking! Given that Florida is still a mosquito-infested swamp even in late October, apply some DEET containing insect repellants. A little preparation can go a long way toward keeping everyone comfortable and safe.

When it comes to trick-or-treating, supervision is key. Young children should always be accompanied by an adult, while older kids should travel in groups and stick to familiar neighborhoods. Remind your child to use sidewalks, cross at crosswalks, and avoid running across streets. Carrying a flashlight not only makes children more visible but also helps them see where they’re stepping.

Candy safety is another important part of the evening. Remind children not to eat treats until an adult has had a chance to look them over. For families with food allergies, this is especially important—checking labels and sorting candy ahead of time can prevent dangerous reactions. You may also want to keep a few “safe” treats on hand to swap out for candy your child can’t eat. Teal pumpkins on a porch indicate that non-candy treats are available at that house for children with food allergies. Consider putting one out on your front porch!

At West Orlando Pediatrics in Ocoee (and spitting distance from Winter Garden, Oakland, & Clermont), our goal is for families to enjoy a fun, safe, and healthy holiday. Dr. O’Brien and our team wish your children a Halloween filled with costumes, laughter, and plenty of treats. With just a few precautions, you can ensure your evening is spooky in spirit—but safe in practice.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common developmental conditions in children, affecting perhaps 1 in 20.

Some children may struggle to focus, daydream often, or have trouble finishing tasks. Others may show signs of impulsivity, restlessness, or difficulty staying seated in class. Sometimes, ADHD can be overlooked until middle school or beyond in smart kids that have found ways to compensate for more mild symptoms. That’s why early recognition and evaluation are so important.

Identifying ADHD early opens the door to meaningful support. Interventions can include school accommodations (in the form of a 504 plan or IEP), like preferential seating, movement breaks, or extra time for assignments, which allow children to demonstrate their true abilities without being held back by symptoms. These changes not only improve academic performance but also boost confidence and self-esteem. Just as importantly, families gain tools to better understand their child’s needs and strengths.

At West Orlando Pediatrics, we have over 40 years of experience working alongside families to diagnose and manage ADHD in children of West Orange and Lake counties. Over the decades, we’ve seen firsthand how early intervention can transform a child’s educational and social journey. Our approach is comprehensive, considering each child’s unique strengths and challenges, and tailoring recommendations to support them both at home and at school.

We also remain committed to staying current with new and emerging therapies. In addition to well-established strategies, families may benefit from novel approaches such as visual therapy, which can help children strengthen focus and coordination. We believe in a balanced approach that combines proven methods with forward-thinking innovations, always with the goal of helping children reach their fullest potential.

ADHD is not a one-size-fits-all condition, and managing it requires patience, expertise, and teamwork. Families can count on Dr. O’Brien and the West Orlando Pediatrics team in Ocoee to walk alongside them at every step, providing resources, support, and encouragement. With the right guidance, children with ADHD can not only succeed, but truly thrive—in the classroom, at home, and in life.

Many parents wonder if their child really needs a check-up every single year, especially if they rarely get sick.

The truth is, annual well visits are about so much more than treating illness—they are about preventing problems before they start. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and West Orlando Pediatrics strongly recommend yearly well visits for children of all ages. These visits provide a consistent opportunity to monitor your child’s growth, development, and overall well-being in a way that urgent visits or sick visits cannot.

At a well visit, we look at the “big picture.” That includes tracking height and weight, as well as reviewing developmental milestones, school performance, and social-emotional growth. We also check vision, hearing, and blood pressure, while ensuring immunizations are up to date. Sometimes even small changes—like a dip on a growth chart or subtle behavioral struggles—can be the first clue to something that deserves attention. Detecting concerns early allows families to intervene before they become bigger challenges.

Preventive care is another cornerstone of the well visit. These appointments give families the chance to talk about nutrition, sleep, screen time, mental health, and physical activity. They’re also a time to discuss new stages of development—whether that’s toilet training in toddlers, friendships and school readiness in early grade school, or puberty and independence in adolescents and young adults (we see "kids" through age 26!). Each year brings new milestones and new questions, and a well visit ensures your child has guidance through every stage.

For older kids, teens, and young adults, these visits can be especially meaningful. They provide a safe space for your child to voice questions or concerns privately, building trust with their doctor while learning to take more ownership of their health. This helps set the stage for healthy habits and responsible decision-making well into adulthood.

If you reside in Winter Garden, Ocoee, or Clermont (or really anywhere in the greater Orange and Lake counties), consider West Orlando Pediatrics as an accessible partner for your child's wellbeing. Parents know their child best, and Dr O'Brien's role is to support that knowledge with medical expertise and guidance. Think of us as part of your child’s “team,” ensuring that every child has the best chance to grow, develop, and thrive. By making annual well visits a priority, you’re giving your child the gift of consistent, preventive care that pays off for a lifetime.

Planning a family vacation this summer? Whether you’re flying, road-tripping, or setting sail on a cruise, traveling with children doesn’t have to be stressful. At West Orlando Pediatrics in Ocoee, I often help families prepare for smoother travel—and these tips can make a big difference for all ages, from infants to teens.

For toddlers and babies, routine is everything. Try to stick to their usual schedule as much as possible, even in a new environment. If you’re flying, offer a pacifier, bottle, or snack during takeoff and landing to help with ear pressure. For long car rides or cruise excursions, build in breaks and bring a bag of small activities like stickers, snacks, and favorite toys to keep your little one engaged.

And no matter where you go, don’t forget a mini travel medical kit. I recommend packing children's Tylenol, Benadryl, hydrocortisone cream, and Band-Aids to handle common bumps, bites, or fevers that can pop up during a trip. Older kids can get involved, too—let them pack their carry-on or track the journey on a map. With some preparation and a positive mindset, your summer travel can be a source of lifelong memories instead of stress. Safe travels from all of us at West Orlando Pediatrics!

At West Orlando Pediatrics in Ocoee, we know that summer is a time for sunshine, water play, and family fun. But it’s also when children are most at risk for preventable injuries and sunburn. As your local pediatrician, I want to share a few quick tips to keep your family safe—so you can focus on making happy memories all summer long.

Let’s start with water safety. Drowning remains one of the leading causes of accidental death in children, and it can happen in seconds. Florida leads the nation in this unfortunate statistic. Whether you’re at the beach, a public pool, or your backyard, always designate an adult to be the "water watcher." Consider enrolling your kids in swim lessons before the season heats up—Southwest Aquatics in Ocoee offers excellent, age-appropriate instruction to help kids stay safe and confident in the water.

Don’t overlook sun protection and bike safety. Apply SPF 30+ sunscreen every 2 hours, especially after swimming or sweating. Lightweight clothing, wide-brimmed hats, and shade breaks are great ways to avoid sunburn. And anytime your child is riding a bike, scooter, or rollerblades, a properly fitted helmet is a must. From all of us at West Orlando Pediatrics, we wish you a summer full of laughter, growth, and safe adventures!

Diagnosing & Managing Your Child's Allergies This Spring

Managing allergies has changed quite a bit in the past 1-2 decades. Here's some helpful information!

Ah, springtime! The season of renewal, pots of gold, bunnies hiding eggs, and ...allergies. Though Florida experiences a bloom of allergens in nearly every every month, the tree pollens are especially at their peak now, followed by the grasses and weeds throughout summer and into autumn (followed by more tree pollens).

Diagnosing and managing allergies has changed quite a bit in the past 1-2 decades. While skin-prick tests continue to be a useful tool, the advent of serum IgE allergy testing has opened testing to nearly anyone who stands to benefit from a simple diagnostic blood test. At West Orlando Pediatrics, we offer this panel (which can also include food allergens) at ages 1+. This is years before skin-prick testing through an allergist is recommended, and can empower a parent of even young children to mitigate specific environmental allergens (think mold, dust mites, pet danders).

Mid-level management at our office generally includes some combination of antihistamines (Zyrtec, Claritin), steroids (Flonase, Nasacort), and montelukast (prescription Singulair).

Highly allergic individuals and those wishing to minimize exposure to medications can stand to benefit from a referral to an allergist. Skin-prick testing there can expand the panel of tested allergens, and can then be utilized to create a custom allergy shot or sublingual allergy drop. Allergy shots are administered every several weeks at your allergist's office, whereas drops are brought home and given every day after your child brushes their teeth in the morning. Both are a custom blend of low-level allergens designed to desensitize your child to the offending agent(s). Both are effective when used as directed in reducing your child's sensitivity to specific allergen triggers, and they decrease the need for polypharmacy (using several different medications to combat the same problem).

If you suspect your child has allergies, give us a call. About 90% of Dr O'Brien's allergic patients are diagnosed and treated in-office or via telemedicine without the need for a referral. This is a common problem that is perennially at the forefront of our attention; we estimate that 30% of our patients suffer from some degree of environmental allergies!

Spring is the perfect time to encourage kids to get outside, stay active, and build healthy habits.

As the weather warms up, parents can take advantage of the season to promote a lifestyle that supports their child's physical and mental well-being. Here are ten simple yet effective ways to help your children stay healthy and active this spring.

          1. Encourage Outdoor Play

Fresh air and sunshine are great for kids! Encourage outdoor activities like bike riding, playing tag, or flying kites. Outdoor play improves physical fitness and supports social development.

          2. Plan Family Walks or Hikes

Make family time active by going for walks around the neighborhood, visiting local parks, or exploring nature trails. Walking together is a great way to stay active and bond as a family.

          3. Promote Healthy Eating

Spring brings a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. Involve your children in meal planning and grocery shopping to introduce them to healthy foods and encourage balanced eating habits.

          4. Stay Hydrated

As temperatures rise, it’s essential to keep kids hydrated. Encourage them to drink plenty of water, especially when playing outdoors or participating in sports.

          5. Establish a Consistent Sleep Routine

Adequate sleep is crucial for growing children. Maintain a regular bedtime routine to ensure they get enough rest, which helps with energy levels, mood, and overall health.

          6. Limit Screen Time

Encourage kids to spend less time on screens and more time being active. Set limits on screen use and provide alternatives like reading, puzzles, or outdoor games.

          7. Get Involved in Spring Sports

Spring is a great time to sign up for community sports like soccer, baseball, or swimming. Participating in team sports helps kids develop teamwork skills, stay active, and build confidence.

          8. Practice Sun Safety

With more time spent outside, protect your child’s skin by applying sunscreen, wearing hats, and staying in the shade when necessary. Sun safety is key to preventing burns and long-term skin damage.

Children learn by watching their parents. Set a positive example by staying active, making healthy food choices, and prioritizing wellness as a family.
